Auxerre vs Lens Predictions
- Auxerre are still fighting relegation
- Lens have second place secure irrespective of Saturday’s result.
- Auxerre have just one defeat in their last seven at home.
Needs must for Auxerre
Auxerre sit two points clear of the Ligue 1 drop zone ahead of the final round of fixtures, where they host Champions League-bound Lens.
At any other point in the season a win for the visitors would be the obvious call here but Auxerre are the team in desperate need of a result, while Lens have second place secured. Nantes sit immediately below Auxerre and a draw wouldn’t necessarily be enough for the hosts against Lens due to the fact La Maison Jaune have a superior goal difference.
Auxerre can make most of home advantage
If Auxerre do avoid the drop it will be down to a strong run of results at home as they have just one defeat in their last seven at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamp – and that defeat came via 2-1 loss to PSG.
Lens have been flying with 10 wins in their last 11 games but they guaranteed second place with a win over Ajaccio last time out and now having nothing left to play for, so at a big price a win for AJA appeals.
Both teams capable of scoring
Lens have scored in 14 consecutive away games and overall it has been 18 games since they last drew a blank.
Auxerre may be a little nervous, particularly if relegation rivals Nantes take an early lead against Angers, and they have gone seven games without a clean sheet so it seems likely that both teams will score. A 2-1 win for the hosts is the correct score prediction – as Lens have only conceded more than twice in one game all season across all competitions.
No Auxerre player has scored more than five goals in Ligue 1 this season, which perhaps goes some way to explaining why they need a result on the last day of the campaign, but Jubal looks a reasonable outside contender to get on the scoresheet. The defender has three Ligue 1 goals to his name – the best league tally he has managed in his career so far – and occasionally takes penalties so he may well be the hosts’ hero on Saturday.
