Charlton vs Reading Predictions

  • Reading have kept back to back Championship clean sheets
  • They’ve lost only two of their 10 trips to sides below them, scoring two goals per game
  • Charlton have lost seven of 10 meetings with midtable sides at home
  • The Addicks have seen under 1.5 goals in five of their last six matches

Charlton fading as finish approaches

Charlton looked to be closing in on safety in midweek, but a late turnaround from Brentford saw the Addicks beaten 2-1 to leave them narrowly outside the drop zone. Lee Bowyer’s team need to recover their great early season form in order to move towards safety, but things are falling apart for them in the run-in.

The Addicks returned with back to back wins after the restart, but they are slowing fading with their performances. The departure of Lyle Taylor has left them vulnerable, as Charlton have little firepower in the final third. They can create chances, but the cutting edge isn’t there. Will that be the case when they meet Reading this weekend?

Progress for Royals

Reading have kept back to back clean sheets in the Championship, losing only twice in their last seven matches. They are likely to hold off a Charlton side who have little attacking threat, while they will be searching for a win in this meeting with a side who already had a mixed record at home.

Charlton have lost eight times in 21 home games, while Reading are aiming to extend some solid form on the road. Against the sides below them in the table, the Royals have lost two of 10 away trips. In that run, they have won five times, scoring 20 goals. That impressive return should be enough to lead them to a victory over a Charlton side who have struggled across their last two matches.

Charlton’s midtable blues

Charlton have an odd record in the Championship this term, going unbeaten against all of the current top six. They’re able to raise their game to stop stronger teams, while they can perform against their direct rivals, too. Charlton have taken 10 points from four at home to the bottom five. It’s outside of that where things are going wrong for Bowyer and his team.

Against the Championship’s middle 12 – from seventh down to 18th – Charlton have lost seven of 10 matches. So far, 30 of their 46 points have come from either their eight meetings with the bottom five, or 11 clashes with the top six. That leaves 16 points from 23 matches with teams in midtable, so our predictions are backing them to lose to a Reading side who are safely in the middle and moving on up.

With Reading keeping consecutive clean sheets, we expect them to shut out this goal-shy Charlton side. The hosts have lost 1-0 in two of their last three at home, while five of their last six games have seen under 1.5 goals. Nearly a quarter of Charlton’s home matches have finished 1-0 to the visitors, so an away win by the same scoreline is our correct score prediction in this one.
