Deportivo Capiata vs Universitario Predictions

Deportivo Capiata, a club who were only established in 2008, played their first ever Copa Libertadores match in January after their 4th place finish in the Paraguay Primera Division last season granted them qualification to the First round of South America’s biggest club competition.

It wasn’t exactly a class match as far as football for the neutrals go, but their 1-0 win at home against Deportivo Tachira was followed by a goalless draw away from home to see them progress in the tournament. They are now unbeaten in 13 matches in all competitions.

They have only won seven of those games, but it’s still a meteoric rise in footballing terms, considering they were only founded nine years ago and only promoted to the top flight in 2012.

Universitario have a bit more history under their belts. They have lifted the Peruvian Primera Division title 26 times  and were runners up in the Copa Libertadores back in 1972. Recent years have seen a bit of a decline, but they are still fairly regular faces in the Copa Libertadores.

They missed out on qualification last season and their last outing in 2014 results in them losing five of their six group games and finishing rock bottom of the table. They haven’t won a Copa Libertadores game since 2010, where they somehow made it through to the last 16, only to be knocked out on penalties after the two-legged tie with Sao Paulo ended goalless.

Universitario’s form in all competitions wasn’t much better at the end of last season. They have won just one of their last ten matches in all competitions and have lost five of them. Away from home they have only managed one win in their last 12 attempts as well.

Deportivo Capiata may be the newbies of the Copa Libertadores, but I think they have the beating of Universitario here. The Peruvian visitors have failed to score in their last five away days in the Copa Libertadores and generally look out of their depth in the competition. Deportivo Capiata have won four of their last six home games in all competitions and know they will have to perform well in front of their own fans to stand a chance of going on a cup run. Odds of 7/10 for a Deportivo Capiata win look good value, so I’m backing that alongside a 1-0 correct score predictions at 9/2.
