27th Aug - Tigers vs Angels

Detroit Tigers
    LA Angels

      Tip Reasoning

Justin Verlander has turned his season around after a poor start. 32 isn’t young for a pitcher with the type of mileage that Verlander has picked up on his arm, but he’s proving that he has picked up in guile, what he hasn’t typically had in velocity. His improved form gives Detroit a decent chance to end a poor run of form in their series against the Angels, which was extended in a tightly played 8-7 loss last night.

The Tigers line-up will need to better form against Angels’ pitcher Hector Santiago. Only Jose Iglesias averages more than .230 against Santiago in multiple at-bats, while the likes of Alex Aliva (o for 8) and Miguel; Cabrera (2 for 11) have enjoyed very little success against tonight’s starter.

Still, Cabrera appeared to be swinging the bat well yesterday and the Tigers have generally hit at a good clip over the last week and a half. They’ll fancy their chances at Comerica Park if Verlander is able to produce some of his better stuff.

Santiago might have enjoyed success against Detroit in the past, but his post All-Star break form has been bad. He’s gone 0-3 with a 5.06 ERA over his last six starts and it has had an impact on an Angels team that is still battling to stay alive in the hunt for the AL West division title and a Wildcard spot.

Albert Pujols is a relatively important part of that picture. He set the tone in the first inning yesterday with a home run (3 RBIs). He’s got four home runs in his last 10 games and is on course for his best season in LA so far – he’s already got more HRs (34) than in the previous three campaigns. Incidentally, Pujols has always enjoyed a good level of success against Verlander (6 for 12).

      Three Reasons for Betting Tips

      1. Angels are struggling on road

Yesterday’s win was only the second on the road in their last 12 for the Angels. They’ve struggled away from home and their pitching staff, home and away, have struggled in particular. Detroit are playing decent baseball at home and we’re expecting a win here.

      2. Verlander looks like Verlander

After an awful start to the season, Verlander is pitching well. He’s adjusted his selection of deliveries and he has an assertiveness at the plate. We expect him to start strongly in the first 2-3 innings in this contest (hence the betting tip on Detroit to score first) and to get through enough innings for the Tigers to pull out a win here.

      3. Cabrera vs Pujols

Both of the franchises’ respective big hitters made an impact last night. We’re expecting each to produce another good performance tonight, but look for Cabrera and Detroit to come out on top in Game 2.
