Eintracht Trier vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions
The “game of the year” awaits Regionalliga Sudwest side Eintracht Trier on Monday. The hosts, who play in the German fifth tier, are off to a poor start in their league campaign, taking just one point from their first three matches (D1 L2). Coach Peter Rubeck has commented: “we are still getting used to the set up of a completely new squad, but nothing beats the magic of the DFB Pokal and the experience to play against world class players. Our players should just enjoy this match. They’ve earnt it”. Sounds like the visitors shouldn’t have too much trouble here.
Dortmund’s 2-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup last Sunday is bound to hurt. They had the better chances, and far more of them too, but that wasn’t enough to put down the four year reigning champions. Dortmund’s pre-season was also peppered with disappointment but overall they have shown a lot of potential , such as in the 4-1 win against Manchester United in the International Champions Cup, which leads us to believe they will be title contenders in the Bundesliga this season. No doubt another run to the latter stages of the cup is on Thomas Tuchel’s agenda. Tuchel’s men met Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal final last season, unsurprisingly, where they were unable to capitalise on penalties after holding the champions to a 0-0 draw after extra time.
With the contrasting ambition and quality of players, it is obvious that the Bundesliga giants are an extremely short price at 1/14 to win after 90 minutes. Considering that Eintracht Trier are simply out to enjoy the match and are not necessarily looking to sit back and try to defend a 0-0 draw, we should be able to expect plenty of goals here. The main question to consider is whether or not the fifth tier side are capable of scoring one past Dortmund on the offensive; we don’t believe they are. Eintracht Trier have failed to score in two of their three Regionalliga matches so far this season, that is, against teams who are supposed to be on the same level. As Dortmund are obviously miles above the fifth tier in quality, we feel it’s therefore not unreasonable to assume the visitors should be able to keep a clean sheet most of the time here.
As such, over 2.5 goals and both teams NOT to score at 5/4 and Borussia Dortmund to win 4-0 at 13/2 with bet365 are out top choice bets for this match.
