Inter Milan to Win and Under 3.5 Match Goals
Reasoning
Empoli vs Inter Milan Predictions
- Empoli have only won one of their last 11 games in Serie A (D4 L6).
- Each of the last eight matches to feature the hosts has contained a maximum of three goals.
- Empoli have only scored one non-penalty goal in their last five league games.
- Prior to Wednesday’s Champions League draw against Benfica, Inter Milan had seen 11 successive games contain under 3.5 goals.
Can Nerazzurri replicate European heroics?
Inter Milan may have eased off late on in Wednesday’s 3-3 draw with Benfica at San Siro, but a 5-3 aggregate triumph secured their first Champions League semi-final appearance since they won the competition in 2009-10 – with local rivals AC Milan awaiting them in the last four. Inter’s European form may just be keeping Simone Inzaghi in a job amid an awful domestic run, and they need to refocus and get back to winning ways at Empoli on Sunday.
Indeed, Inter have gone five matches without a victory in Serie A, losing four times in that run and failing to net on three occasions. The Nerazzurri made changes for last week’s defeat to Monza, but prior to Wednesday’s European tussle, they had seen 11 successive games contain under 3.5 goals. Their attacking shortcomings are perhaps best demonstrated by the fact Romelu Lukaku has not scored an open-play league goal since August, but Inter did at least manage to hand several key players a rest in the latter stages of their midweek contest.
While Inter have struggled for inspiration in Serie A recently, Empoli could be the perfect opponents to help the Nerazzurri back into form – they have won one of their 11 league games since upsetting Inzaghi’s team in January. Moreover, Paolo Zanetti’s men have only scored one non-penalty goal in their last five Serie A outings, netting just twice overall. Only relegation candidates Sampdoria (19) and Verona (24) have scored fewer than Empoli’s 25 goals in Serie A this campaign, so Inter will be confident of keeping things tight.
Top-four chasers can edge low-scoring affair
With Inter able to take Lautaro Martinez, Edin Dzeko and Nicolo Barella out of the firing line when holding a 5-1 aggregate lead over Benfica, Inzaghi’s men should be fresh for their trip to Tuscany, where one of Italy’s worst attacking outfits look unlikely to get much joy.
Backing Inter to win a game containing under 3.5 goals looks a prudent way of keeping several scorelines in play on Sunday, while a routine 2-0 away triumph could represent a solid correct score selection.
