Tip Reasoning

  • England have won their last eight home matches
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored in all but one of his seven starts this season
  • England have scored 24 goals in their last five home matches
  • Belgium have scored in 20 consecutive internationals

Scalp for Southgate?

England did as expected in midweek, as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Wales. That success was England’s eighth home win on the spin, a run which could continue when they meet Belgium in this Nations League clash on Sunday evening.

Belgium slipped up with a 1-1 draw against Ivory Coast on Thursday night, while they’ve shown their weaknesses in the Nations League before. Belgium’s biggest setback since the World Cup was their 5-2 loss to Switzerland in 2018, arguably their only difficult competitive game in that time. Could they suffer another defeat at Wembley?

Dom’s Dream Debut

Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his remarkable rise with a strike on his debut against Wales. That’s taken the Everton forward onto 10 goals for the season so far, while he’s only failed to score in one appearance so far this term. That’s good news for Gareth Southgate, who seemingly needs a stand-in for captain Harry Kane.

Jose Mourinho has been putting pressure on the FA and Southgate to rest Kane, with the Nations League double header the perfect chance to do so with England switching to tournament focus in 2021. That should allow for Calvert-Lewin to start his second game of the break, especially following his impressive display against Wales. Given that, we think that the Everton forward is worth backing to score any time at Wembley.

Attacking Returns for Both

England have scored 24 goals in their five home matches since the start of 2019. They have plenty of attacking talents and given the high-scoring Premier League start, we expect the Three Lions to cause problems going forward. However, we can’t see them coping with this Belgian attack.

The Red Devils have scored 16 times in their six matches in the Nations League, while they haven’t failed to score since losing to France at the last World Cup, finding the net in their last 20 matches. Following that run, we are going with both teams to score as our first prediction.

Meanwhile, we remain unconvinced by the Belgians in big matches. While the visitors are capable going forward, they haven’t yet kicked on despite the talent they have available. Southgate has led England to victories over Spain and Croatia in this competition and we’re backing another with a 2-1 home victory our correct score prediction.
