Estonia vs Gibraltar Predictions

Estonia are coming into this match knowing that it’s their best chance of getting three points in the entire campaign. They are perennially towards the bottom of their qualification groups for major tournaments, although the presence of Lithuania and San Marino in their Euro 2016 qualifying group meant that they finished 4th.

This time round they will face the likes of Belgium, Greece, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cyprus, and Gibraltar. It’s almost a done deal that Gibraltar will finish bottom, but Estonia will want to take advantage of this home clash and get three points on the board.

Their opening match in the campaign didn’t exactly go to plan. They visited Bosnia-Herzegovina and came away licking their wounds after a 5-0 thrashing thanks to sustained pressure throughout the whole match from the hosts. This made it four defeats, two draws, and one win in their last seven outings. Their singular win came at home against Andorra, who are a team at a similar level to Gibraltar.

Gibraltar are officially the worst team in this World Cup qualification campaign. They sit joint 205th in the FIFA World Rankings, two positions below Andorra in 203rd.

It’s no surprise really. They were granted permission to play back in 2014 and since then have won just one match, a 1-0 victory at home to Malta in 2014. Other than that they have lost 16 of their 19 historic matches, drawing against Estonia in 2014 and Liechtenstein in March this year.

Defensively they are horrendous. They have conceded a huge 47 goals in their last ten matches, including 14 in their last three outings. Four of these came at home to Greece in their first match in these World Cup qualifiers.

Away from home things get even worse for them. They have lost seven of their eight away games, conceding 39 goals and scoring three times. Their singular draw came at Estonia though, so there is a glimmer of hope.

Estonia’s defence is pretty awful and I think the odds of them to win this match are far too short given their lack of quality. Backing Gibraltar to get something from it would be a risky one. Gibraltar have only conceded three goals to Estonia in the two games they have played though, with both games ending with fewer than three on the score-sheet.

Gibraltar may be very poor at the back, but Estonia have an almost complete lack of talent going forward. They have only scored three goals in their last five home games and have netted just four in their last nine at home and away. This includes a game at home against Andorra, in which they only managed to score twice.

A low scoring game is well within the realms of possibility here, so I’m backing Estonia to Win and Under 2.5 Goals at 15/8 along with a 2-0 win for Estonia at 15/4.
