FC Porto vs Tondela Predictions

  • Porto have won each of their last 12 meetings with Tondela, winning by two clear goals in six of the last eight.
  • Porto have won eight of their last nine games and scored 20 goals with only conceded in that time.
  • Tondela were relegated after a home draw with Boavista last weekend, making it seven games since their last win.

Porto’s pedigree impossible to overlook

Porto look set to complete the double on Sunday when Sergio Conceicao’s side should have far too much quality and organisation to allow relegated Tondela to stop them at Jamor. The Dragons dominated the Primeira Liga from almost start to finish this season, collecting 91 points and scoring 86 goals in their 34 matches.

Down at Tondela it was a different story as the Auriverdes, initially under Pako Ayestaran and then Nuno Campos, flattered to deceive. They finished the league campaign with the worst defensive record in the top flight and fell into 17th place on the final day when they couldn’t hold on to two leads to beat Boavista at home, which means relegation.

Campos must rejuvenate his side in the space of a week to take on the champions and it looks a tall order. Tondela have lost each of their last 12 meetings with the Dragons, with six of their last eight head-to-head defeats being by more than just a solitary goal.

Comfortable win on cards for Conceicao’s men

That seems the best place to find a bet with a decent payout for this cup final with around 8/15 on offer for Porto to cover a -1 handicap again. It is something Conceicao’s side did in 17 of their 28 league games against teams not named Benfica, Sporting Lisbon or Braga.

Winning by multiple goal margins was something that became commonplace for Porto in the final weeks of the season when they scored 20 goals and conceded just once in their final eight league games, so the form looks good for a comfortable win for the favourites. We’re predicting a 3-1 scoreline as Tondela may see their best form of defence being to attack and we note that four of the last six meetings between these clubs have seen both teams score.

Evanilson is an attractively-priced anytime goalscorer option at around even money and is Porto’s top cup goal-getter this year with seven strikes in seven appearances.
