Everton -1

Reason for tip

Everton opened the new season with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace and can follow that up by beating Preston with room to spare in the EFL Cup. North End have suffered back-to-back defeats in the Championship and needed penalties against Huddersfield of League One in the first round of this competition. The visitors can cover a -1 handicap even if they do rotate at Deepdale.

Everton 3-1

Reason for tip

Preston are yet to draw a blank this season and can at least get on the scoresheet. Everton have enough quality to win fairly comfortably even if they do concede so a 3-1 away win has a chance.

Beto To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Beto was Everton’s top scorer last season with 10 goals across all competitions but he had to settle for a place on the bench against Palace at the weekend. He is a candidate to come into the starting side and if he is involved from the off he is a contender for an anytime goal.

Preston vs Everton Predictions

  • Preston have lost both of their league fixtures so far
  • Everton opened the new season with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace
  • North End haven’t progressed beyond the second round since 2021-22

Deepdale assignment for Everton

The Premier League clubs not involved in Europe enter the EFL Cup this week and on Wednesday Everton make the trip to Championship outfit Preston North End.

The Merseyside outfit made a solid start to the new season over the weekend with a 2-0 success over Crystal Palace at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Everton boss David Moyes, a former Preston player and manager, will probably make a few changes to his team for this cup clash but the visitors should still be able to win fairly comfortably at Deepdale.

North End have made a poor start in the Championship as they lost at promoted Bolton in the opening round of games and followed that up with a 3-1 loss at this venue to relegated Wolves. Preston also needed penalties to edge out Huddersfield in the first round of this competition at Everton’s former home of Goodison Park, due to the new hybrid pitch that has been installed at Deepdale.

Preston were well beaten by Wolves and won’t have too many complaints about losing to Bolton either. Everton are a level above both of those sides, even if Moyes does rotate, and they look capable of covering a -1 handicap in this Wednesday night cup game.

North End are yet to draw a blank this season and may at least be able to keep that run going, so a 3-1 away win is the correct score prediction.

Beto was Everton’s top scorer last season with 10 goals across all competitions. The Guinea-Bissau international had to settle for a place on the bench against Palace but came on for the final 10 minutes or so and managed one shot. He is a candidate to come into the starting side and if he is involved from the off he is a contender for an anytime goal.
