New-look Spurs may be vulnerable

New season, same old Tottenham as they suffered a 3-0 beating at Brentford in their Premier League opener and it would take a brave punter to be piling in at short odds for their EFL Cup second-round clash with Charlton.

Spurs finished only two points clear of the relegation places in the Premier League last season and, despite a large sum being spent trying to bolster their squad, there was little to get excited about in their curtain-raiser..

Injuries have long been a hindrance to Tottenham and they were severely weakened in attacking areas at Brentford, where they were without Dejan Kuluveski, Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus and Wilson Odobert.

Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven and Pape Sarr were also missing and it was a sign that it could take time for Roberto De Zerbi to get the best out of his new-look team.

Spurs may find a way to win against lesser-ranked opposition but they are way below full strength and it isn’t plain-sailing against a confident Charlton side that have started the season with three straight wins.

A 3-1 victory at Cheltenham in the first round has been followed by 2-1 wins over Derby and West Ham, who are favourites for the Championship title.

The Addicks can treat this as a free hit and backing them with a two-goal headstart on the handicap – if they lose by one goal the selection is a winner – makes plenty of appeal.

Tottenham will be expected to make changes, especially with a visit from Newcastle on the horizon on Saturday, and a well-organised Charlton may be able to frustrate them for large periods.
