America looked doomed to the drop just a couple of weeks ago and their situation is still perilous but there suddenly looks to be a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. They’ve taken 5 points from their last 3 games and they weren’t easy matches by any means. Draws at home to Gremio and away at in-form Sport Recife followed by a shock 1-0 win against Santos have moved them closer to the sides above them. They are still rooted to the foot of the table and 8 points from safety but new coach Enderson Moreira, their 3rd of the season, at least looks to have got them organised defensively.

Fluminense have never had that problem and boast one of the best defensive records in the league but at the other end they are a little short on quality and that is why they are again lingering in mid-table. They’ve only lost one of their last 8 games though in all competitions so they seem to be on the right track and they were fairly comfortable winners in their two most recent home games against Cruzeiro and Ponte Preta.

This is one they will really be expecting 3 points from but it won’t be as easy as they thought it might’ve been with America looking more solid. This game really looks like it will be a very low scoring one. America have found some joy in a more cautious approach and will certainly come here and put men behind the ball. Their last 3 matches have produced only 3 goals and against a Fluminense side that lack creativity and finishers, they should restrict the hosts to not that many openings.
