Gremio vs Athletico Paranaese Predictions

  • Gremio have won only once in their last five Serie A home games.
  • Athletico Paranaense have kept five clean sheets in their last eight Serie A away games.
  • Athletico Paranaense have kept nine clean sheets in 13 games (in all competitions) this season.

Athletico’s stout defence should give Gremio problems

Gremio host Athletico Paranaense in Brazil’s Serie A on Sunday with the aim of moving out of the bottom three in the table.

It’s true that Tiago Nunes’ side have only played half the amount of games as all but one of their league rivals and the nature of their opening round defeat was cruel.

Having fought back from two goals down to draw level with Ceara, the Fortaleza club nicked all three points with a 90th minute winner.

The club have also had issues with players and coaching staff testing positive for Covid-19 and are unlikely to be at full strength for the visit of Athletico-PR.

Strikers Diego Souza and Ferreira, alongside defender Rafinha, were left out of the midweek cup clash with Brasiliense but reports claim they have fully recovered.

Goalkeeper Brenno and midfielder Matheus Henrique are also available after Brazil Olympic team duty.

Whatever line-up the coach fields, his side will find it tough to break down one of the meanest defences in Brazil right now.

The Red and Black have excelled at the back for new coach Antionio Oliviera and kept nine clean sheets in their 13 games under his charge.

Two of those have come in Serie A, five in the Copa Sudamericana and one apiece in the cup and state championships.

However, his side haven’t quite got the balance right in terms of their attack and may struggle to break down Gremio in the same way they did when scoring three at newly-promoted Juventude in the last round.

This will probably be a low-scoring affair with Gremio likely to be frustrated for long periods so we think it’s worth taking Under 1.5 goals for the home side.

It finished 1-0 to Gremio when the two sides met last and our correct score forecast is for a similar outcome.
