Guatemala vs Trinidad And Tobago Predictions

These two sides did meet in the opening round of fixtures at the Gold Cup with Trinidad & Tobago running out 3-1 winners. The Caribbean islanders took 7 points from their group games but were unfortunate to go out on penalties in the Quarter Finals against Panama. They’ll take plenty of positives from their showing though and will be hopeful of a return to World Cup action in Russia.

Guatemala have little chance of making it that far but can be stubborn opponents on their day as they proved when they held eventual winners Mexico to a 0-0 draw in their second Gold Cup match. They suffered a bit of a scare in qualifying for this round when they lost their first leg 1-0 away to Antigua and Barbuda. They recovered with two 2nd half goals in the 2nd leg to win the tie 2-1 and have since held Honduras and El Salvador to 1-1 draws in friendly games.

It’s a little surprising initially to see them as bookmakers favourites to win this match but when you consider their excellent home record in World Cup qualifying it’s little surprise. Guatemala City is a tough place to go and Guatemala are unbeaten in 9 World Cup matches in their capital since USA won there in 2008.

Trinidad & Tobago were actually beaten 5-1 in Guatemala during their ultimately successful bid to reach Germany 2006 so will know how tough this could be. By the standards of the region they are an attacking side though and even in their two recent meetings with Mexico, which ended 4-4 and 3-3 they didn’t just sit back so we should see two sides looking to win the match here and therefore backing both teams to score at 11/10 looks like a tempting bet.

Despite Guatemala’s excellent home record in the competition, they have been fairly poor of late so it’s hard to feel confident about backing them to win this one, therefore consider going for a 1-1 draw at 5/1.
