Guinea vs Malawi Predictions

  • Guinea have only ever lost once to Malawi, winning four and drawing four of their nine previous World Cup and Cup of Nations meetings.
  • Guinea managed just five goals in their six recent World Cup qualifiers.
  • Guinea kept clean sheets in both of their pre-tournament friendlies, beating Rwanda twice.
  • Malawi finished bottom of their World Cup qualification group, losing five of their six games and losing to Mozambique.

Guinea given chance at another knockout run

Guinea reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2015, and look to have a solid chance of another deep run after being drawn into a group in which they are clearly the second-strongest side.

Although Naby Keita and company failed to win a single game in their World Cup qualifying group, finishing third behind Morocco and Guinea-Bissau, they will be confident of besting both Malawi and Zimbabwe in Group B. They have lost just once to Malawi in nine competitive meetings, winning four and drawing four.

Malawi look to be competing with Zimbabwe for a place as one of the tournament’s best third-placed finishers, after finishing bottom of a World Cup qualification group which contained Mozambique, ranked 118th in the world. They scored just two goals in that group, and look unlikely to present Guinea with too many problems on Monday.

Back Guinea to win a low-scoring affair

Although Guinea shipped 11 goals in six games at the second stage of World Cup qualifying, seven of those came in two games against Morocco. They only netted five times in their six games, making a relatively low-scoring win a potentially smart play here.

We’re backing Guinea to kick off their campaign by winning a game featuring under 2.5 goals. A narrow 1-0 win for Kaba Diawara’s team, meanwhile, seems a decent correct score prediction.
