Werder can spring another surprise

Werder Bremen have caused a few upsets recently, winning their last three Bundesliga games as underdogs. They are worth backing again away to Heidenheim on Saturday.

Heidenheim are 16th in the league, eight places and 19 points behind eighth-placed Werder Bremen. Heidenheim have won eight, drawn five and lost 20 of their 33 games this season, while Werder Bremen have 13 wins, nine draws and 11 losses.

It seems almost certain Heidenheim will be heading for the relegation play-off – they need to win, hope Hoffenheim lose at home to Bayern but also make up a six-goal difference which is likely to be seven because goals scored is the criteria used after goal difference should teams finish level on points.

Werder Bremen have won three of their last four Bundesliga away games, and they are worth backing again on the road to Heidenheim.
Heidenheim have struggled to keep out Werder Bremen’s in-form attack, failing to keep a clean sheet in 12 of their last 15 Bundesliga home games. They have conceded 29 goals at home this season – an average of 1.81 goals per game from 16 matches.

Their struggles in attack are a major concern. They have failed to score in six of their last eight home games in the Bundesliga and have managed just 12 goals in 16 matches at home this season – an average of 0.75 goals per game.

Heidenheim have lost six of their last eight home matches in the Bundesliga and can be backed to lose again here.

With the Bundesliga averaging 3.1 goals a game this season, a 2-1 away win for Werder Bremen looks a decent correct-score bet.
