LA Dodgers
    Chicago Cubs

      Tip Reasoning

Alex Wood may not go deep into games, but he has given the Dodgers some pretty decent pitching already this season. He has a 1.96 ERA in three starts and two relief efforts at home this season, while holding a 9-8 record with a 3.70 ERA overall.

Wood has been especially effective against left-hand hitters holding them to a .116 over his last seven starts. However, he’s been guilty of walking a few too many batters – more than four per game, which means that he’s getting into some high pitch counts early on and that he’s throwing with men on base more often.

The Cubs might tinker with their line-up to pull some right-handers into this game, but they won’t be messing with starting pitcher Jake Arrieta, who has been playing at a level almost unheard of in Chicago baseball history. He has a chance to match Greg Maddux by recording a 14th straight quality start. He hasn’t faced the Dodgers much during his career, and not since 2013 when he went 0-2 and posted an ERA over nine.

Arrieta is 5-0 in August with a remarkable 0.54 ERA. He’s got an impressive range of pitch options and has hardly put a foot wrong all season posting a 16-6 record with a 2.22 ERA.

Chicago’s hitters could do with finding their swings again after scoring just six runs during a four-game losing streak.

      Three Reasons for Betting Tips

      1. Joe Maddon

Maddon has made his money and built his reputation because he has found ways to win tough games like this one. He’s leading the Cubs back into the postseason for the first time since 2008 and he’ll find a way to manage this game and manufacture a win if his players are not on song.

      2. Pitching mismatch

Wood is pitching well, but the Dodgers are going to have to dig deep into their bullpen. We’re not convinced that they will get much going against Arrieta, who is obviously a favourite to pitch late into another baseball game.

      3. Cubs hitters need to find a way

Six runs in four straight losses. Chicago’s batters need to find a way to score runs and we believe that they’ll do just that in this matchup. It hasn’t been an easy week for the Cubs, but we think they’ll start a new one with some better form and that they’ll score some runs.
