Reason For Lille vs Marseille Predictions

  • Marseille lost their first game since October in midweek.
  • The visitors have won just six of their last 14 away games, for of which came either against sides in the lower league or Ligue 1 sides in the bottom six.
  • Lille have six clean sheets in their last nine home games but have scored 10 goals in this time.
  • Marseille have conceded just twice in their last eight matches, with two goalless draws in the process.

Lille now back on track

Lille have bounced back from a disappointing January to win each of their last three matches. Their most recent victory was against a fairly beatable Angers side but the wins over Strasbourg and 3rd placed Rennes must be commended. They have really been professional in their handlings of the league’s bigger teams and Marseille will absolutely fall into that category here.

Lille will be the hosts for this one which will very much suit them as they have been putting in some tremendous displays at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Les Dogues have won five of their last six in front of their own fans with the only dropped points coming against PSG (0-2). Outwith this and a loss to Ajax in the Champions League, Lille have been very solid at the back with six clean sheets in their last nine home matches and this defensive quality will be what they’ll be looking to showcase against Marseille here.

Marseille’s mean defence

Marseille lost their Coupe de France quarter-final on Wednesday as rivals Lyon beat them 1-0 at the Groupama. It was their first loss since October as they had been on an incredible run of form with 13 wins in the 16 games between the two defeats. Les Olympiens shouldn’t be too disheartened as it was a tough trip to Lyon but they need to bounce back here to keep up their faint title race.

Marseille will be the away side for this one but this hasn’t been where their best performances have come this season which will be cause for concern. They have won six of their last 14 games on the road but two of these came in the cup against lower league opposition with two more coming against 15th placed Saint-Étienne and bottom club Toulouse. They have had their share of slip-ups in Bordeaux, Metz and of course Lyon in midweek so they will need to be on their ‘A’ game here.

Two fantastic back lines to cancel each other out?

The good thing for Marseille entering this is that they have generally been very good at the back with just two goals conceded in their last eight games in all competitions. Both teams have actually been very good at the back and with neither side sparkling in attack (Lille have six in last five games, Marseille have six in last six), we’re backing it to finish 0-0. Marseille have had two goalless stalemates in their last six matches and with these sides boasting mean defences, we see this scoreline happening again here.
