Tip Reasoning

Lille are currently flying high in Ligue 1 as they sit in 2nd place, despite finishing last year in 17th. Christophe Galtier’s side have been magnificent this season with Nicolas Pepe and Jonathan Bamba at the centre of all things clinical. It has been such an incredible turnaround in Galtier’s first full season at the club and they should target this competition as a possible opportunity for silverware, as the Ligue 1 title is almost certainly staying in Paris.

They suffered a slight dip in form towards the end of 2018 with losses to Nice and Strasbourg dampening the atmosphere at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy but they managed to finish strong with just one loss in their final six games of the year. They will be glad the winter break came when it did though as the wheels were ever so slightly coming off but they should be able to come back into this game with fresh bodies and fresh minds.

Lille have been solid in front of the opposition’s goal with eight in their last six games but the same can’t be said for their own as they have only kept a clean sheet in two of their last nine games. There is still quality in this side though, hence the second place standing, but they will be desperate for a big win here to start 2019 off on the right foot.

Sochaux finished 10th in Ligue 2 last season but the fortunes haven’t been the same this time round as they currently find themselves wallowing in 16th place, just three points above the relegation zone. Omar Daf has recently became manager after José Manuel Aira’s horror-show left the team in such a perilous position. The Senegalese manager has done well since joining with three wins from his first five games, after the team had won just three of the previous eleven. Daf’s side did suffer an awful 3-0 defeat to bottom side Red Star but bounced back in their final game of 2018 with a 1-0 victory over 6th place Lorient.

Sochaux have kept three clean sheets under Daf which has stopped a reputation of them being horrible defensively as they had kept just three clean sheets in the 12 matches before Daf joined. They are still pretty poor in front of goal with an average of four goals in their last five matches but there has definitely been signs of improvement at Sochaux, although we think a challenge like Lille will come too soon for Daf’s side to really give it a shot.

Lille have so much quality up front with Bamba and Pepe sharing 20 goals this season but their poor defence could let them down here, as even the likes of Reims and Dijon have scored against them this season; the former being a side Sochaux always had a lot of joy against during Reims’ stay in Ligue 2 in 2016 and 2017. Also, Sochaux have scored in four of their last seven away games, so we’re going to back them to get on the score-sheet. Judging by the stats, we’re predicting a 2-1 win for Lille against this spirited Sochaux side.
