Luzern vs Basel Predictions
Basel lost ground in the title race after losing to Thun before the international break, while this weekends opponents Luzern moved up into sixth place after beating mid table rivals Lugano. Just five points and four place separate these two clubs in the Super League table, and we’re expecting a competitive game that promises goals.
Sunday’s hosts Luzern were away from home last time out, but that didn’t stop them from recording an impressive 4-1 win over Lugano. Vargas scored the only goal of the first half to put Luzern 1-0 up in the thirty-sixth minute, but two minutes after the restart for the second half teammate Schneuwly made it 2-0. The next goal was always going to prove crucial to the end result, and when Vargas scored his second goal of the game just after the hour mark it signaled the end of Lugano’s chances.
The hosts did managed to pull a goal back through Carlinhos with seventy-two minutes on the clock, but Eleke made sure it was no more than a consolation goal by making it 4-1 three minutes later. Luzern didn’t have as much possession as their hosts and both teams created a similar amount of goal scoring opportunities, but the visitors were clinical in the final third and that’s what made the difference in the end.
Eleke and Schürpf joint top score for Luzern with five Super League goals each this season, while Vargas has chipped in with three goals and Schneuwly provides the creativity having claimed five assists. Ajeti is Basel’s leading goalscorer in the league with six goals, but teammate van Wolfswinkel, who spent some time in the Premier League with Norwich City, is just one behind on five Super League goals.
Both van Wolfswinkel and Ajetiscored inside the opening half hour of their trip to Thun, but the hosts responded with a goal of their own in first half stoppage time through Sutter. Thun completely turned the game around in the second half, by first leveling the scoreline through a fifty-fourth minute Sorgić penalty. Tosetti handed Thun the lead in for the first time in the match on the seventy minute mark, and soon after teammate Sorgić netted his brace to wrap up an impressive 4-2 win.
Basel were outplayed and guilty of being wasteful in front of goal last time out, and the gap between themselves and league leaders Young Boys has increased to fourteen points. Luzern could move into the top four with victory over Basel this weekend, and confidence is bound to be high following their big 4-1 win over Lugano.
We’re confident that both teams will score and that over 2.5 goals will be produced when the pair lock horns on Sunday, with the final score ending 3-2 to Basel. Three of the last five meetings between the pair have seen both teams score and over 2.5 goals produced.Four of Luzern’s and four of Basel’s last six matches have seen both teams score and over 2.5 goals produced. The visitors have won three of their last four games away from home and can’t afford to drop any more points if they want to challenge Young boys for the title this season.
