Tip Reasoning

  • Under 2.5 goals have been scored in six of Espanyol’s last seven competitive games.
  • Periquitos have started their La Liga campaign with back to back goalless draws against Osasuna and Villarreal.
  • Five of Mallorca’s last seven competitive matches have also generated under 2.5 goals, including their opening two La Liga fixtures.
  • Three of the last four meetings between the teams have produced less than three goals.

Defence to dominate at Son Moix

Mallorca and Espanyol have both impressed defensively in their opening two La Liga fixtures and we’re expecting an extremely tight contest when the pair face off at Son Moix on Matchday 3.

Only goal difference separated the teams in the final Segunda standings last term with Espanyol ultimately crowned champions thanks to their 17 goal superiority, though both sides boasted an identically sound defensive record with just 28 goals conceded in 42 games.

And the teams have so far held firm since returning to the top flight, with Espanyol keeping two clean sheets in their goalless draws with Osasuna and Villarreal, while Mallorca have conceded just once in beating Alaves (0-1) and drawing with Real Betis (1-1).

Los Bermellones’ draw with Betis extended their unbeaten home run to nine matches (W7, D2) which makes them tough to oppose here, although Espanyol were the last team to triumph at Son Moix when they ran out 1-2 winners here in February.

Overall, though, the margins between these sides look far too narrow to get involved in the 1X2  market and under 2.5 goals is the clear pick based on the sides’ defensive strength. It’s contributed to five of Mallorca’s last seven producing under 2.5, with the same applying to six of Espanyol’s last seven competitive outings.

With three of the last four encounters also generating less than three goals, under 2.5 is our pick for Friday’s action in Palma and we also think that the visitors could rack up their third 0-0 on the bounce.
