Newcomers humbled on opening weekend

Metz’ return to the top flight did not go to plan last weekend as they were demolished 5-1 by Rennes and more goals are to be expected in their first home game of the season.

The newcomers come up against a Marseille side looking to bounce back from their Champions League qualifying exit in midweek, although they did win the second leg of that contest and beat Reims in their Ligue 1 opener last weekend.

Goals expected in Metz

The visitors finished third in the table last term and were much better than their end-of-season form suggests. They won 12 of their 19 Ligue 1 away games last season and should have the quality to take all three points from the Stade Saint-Symphorien on Friday.

However, the best bet appears to be in the goals market. Eight of Marseille’s last nine Ligue 1 games have featured at least three goals and three of these have been 2-1 victories. Their last two competitive games have also ended in 2-1 wins, so I’m backing over 2.5 goals along with a 2-1 correct score prediction.
