Tip Reasoning

  • Middlesbrough have scored in 10 of their last 11 home games in all competitions.
  • Both teams have scored in three of Chelsea’s last five games, while Liverpool and Manchester City are the only English teams who have kept clean sheets against them this season.
  • Boro drew with Manchester United and Spurs in the previous rounds, coming through on penalties and extra time respectively.
  • Chelsea conceded twice at Luton in the previous round.

Biggest test yet for Wilder’s giant killers

Middlesbrough have already seen off Manchester United and Spurs in the FA Cup but it doesn’t get any easier for this year’s giant killers as they entertain Chelsea in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Chelsea are the odds-on favourites to win the match but they nearly came unstuck against Championship opposition in the previous round as they scraped through with a 3-2 win over Luton. Boss Thomas Tuchel opted to rotate for that game and may stick with that policy again on Saturday, as the Blues were in European action in midweek as they won at Lille.

Boro also have other targets as they sit just outside the play-off places, but I’m still expecting boss Chris Wilder to name his best available XI as they look to continue their excellent FA Cup run.

Both teams can find a way through

A Boro or draw result in the double chance market does look one option here but a better option, admittedly at a shorter price, could be both teams to score.

The Riverside Stadium outfit have only failed to score in one of their last 11 home games in all competitions, against Spurs before they went on to win in extra time, and with Chelsea likely to make a few changes at the back they should be able to carve out some opportunities.

Both teams have scored in three of Chelsea’s last five games and only Manchester City, Liverpool and Juventus have stopped them from scoring this season, so I’m expecting both teams to find a way through.

Cup magic could continue for Boro

Even a weakened Chelsea team may be able to progress to the next round but they might need extra time and a 2-2 result looks to have a chance in the correct score market.

Chelsea did request this game be played behind closed doors as they cannot sell any tickets but that won’t be happening and as such Boro have a huge advantage being the home team here, and it wouldn’t come as a massive surprise to see them claim another big result after their exploits at Old Trafford and against Tottenham.

Boro have scored 13 goals in total across their last seven home games and Chelsea have scored at least twice in four of their last five overall. Tuchel’s men also conceded twice against Luton and with home advantage I’m expecting Boro to push the Premier League club all the way in a high-scoring draw.
