Tip Reasoning

  • Monaco have won their last eight league games, but only two have featured more than three goals.
  • Brest have lost four of their last eight away league games (Won 3, Drawn 1).
  • Fewer than four goals have been scored in ten of the last 11 Brest games in Ligue 1.

Brest won’t break the bank of Monte Carlo

After eight straight Ligue 1 wins, putting your money on Monaco feels better than taking it to the bank and we don’t expect that to break when they face Brest in Monte Carlo this weekend. Phillipe Clement’s side are close enough to pinch second spot off Marseille and will be fired up to face a team who beat them 2-0 in Brittany back in October.

After scraping to safety last season, Brest have had a superb campaign and to finish with anything near 50 points  must be hailed as a great achievement. The Pirates, who are outperforming their expected goals, goals against and points tally for the season, saw their three-game winning run ended at home by Strasbourg last weekend.

They have been much more defensively robust this term, but don’t ever look like scoring many goals. Any lack of cutting edge will be a problem against Monaco, who have kept eight clean sheets in 17 Ligue 1 games since Clement took over in January.

Monaco have a miserly defence at home

Les Monagasques’ current winning run began with a 3-0 pumping of PSG at Stade Louis II and since then, they have won as hot home favourites against Troyes, Nice and Angers, conceding only once in all of those games. Therefore, a Monaco win to nil must be a consideration for this clash.

However, Brest’s record of scoring away from home, which they have done in five of their last six road games, is a deterrent and leads us to play it safe with a Monaco to win and under 3.5 goals recommendation. Fewer than four goals have been scored in ten of the last 11 Brest games in Ligue 1 while only two of Monaco’s last eight contests – the away wins at Rennes and Saint-Etienne, have gone over that goals mark.

A 2-0 home win is our correct score forecast because Brest have conceded multiple goals away to five of the current top six clubs in the standings with their only points away to the elite coming via a 2-1 win at Marseille in December. Monaco have conceded an average of 0.38 goals per game at home this year.
