Montpellier vs Rennes Predictions

  • Both teams have not scored in four of Montpellier’s last six home league matches.
  • Both teams have not scored in four of Rennes’ last six away Ligue 1 contests.
  • Montpellier top scorer Stephy Mavididi is out with an injury.

Rennes aiming to stop the rot on the road

Montpellier regained some lost momentum last week and will bid to extend Rennes’ four-game losing sequence when they host their rivals for a European berth on Friday.

La Paillade edged a tight contest with relegation-threatened Lorient 1-0 to move back to ninth place in the standings and stay within striking distance of fifth-placed Rennes. Olivier Dall’Oglio’s side have been a tough watch since top scorer Stephy Mavididi’s knee injury kept him out of their last four games, failing to register an xG figure greater than 0.75 in their last three Ligue 1 contests.

A visit from one of the joint-third best defence in the division is unlikely to produce a goal-laden affair and Friday’s game could follow the pattern of November’s clash in Brittany, which Rennes won at a canter.

Stats suggest BTTS won’t be on the cards

Former MHSC striker Gaetan Laborde could be a factor on his return to face his former club, although he wasn’t able to grab a goal in that earlier fixture and hasn’t scored in his last six appearances on the road. Rennes, who have conceded just three in their last five league games, need to stop an awful away run and the best way to go about that is to become hard to beat.

Therefore, we expect a game of few chances to play out at the Stade de la Mosson and one that may see one or both teams fail to register a goal. Both teams have not scored in four of Montpellier’s last six home league matches and in four of Rennes’ last six away Ligue 1 contests, so the stats point in that direction too.

The 1-0 forecast for the visitors to prevail is based on Rennes’ superb recent record against their hosts and also the fact that three of Montpellier’s last six home games have finished 1-0 to the visitors.
