Tip Reasoning

This weekend’s visit to Montpellier is a must-win game for Troyes who look likely to drop into the second tier unless they can pull off an unlikely victory. The home side have had another strong campaign and are currently in 8th place after an important win over Nice last Sunday, which came on the back of three straight defeats.

Goals have once again been a problem for Montpellier and they have notched just 34, the second lowest of all sides currently in the top half of the table. Selling star striker Steve Mounie to Premier League side Huddersfield Town last summer will not have helped although veteran forward Giovanni Sio has filled the void somewhat by managing 10 goals in his appearances. On the plus side, Montpellier’s defence has been fantastic, with just 31 conceded, just four more than champions PSG who have the best goals against record in the division. For the side to get towards the top six in 2018/19 they will have to identify more prolific forwards and also a better calibre of midfielder. Montpellier’s last game is away at Rennes next weekend so both of their final games are winnable. The most they will probably get however is four points with Rennes having a strong home record this season.

Troyes meanwhile are staring down the barrel. The side are three points from safety heading into the final two weekends and their fate is now out of their own hands. Even if they were to upset the odds and win this Saturday, they would need Lille and Strasbourg to lose their games. It certainly looks more possible that Troyes will be demoted this weekend and having won just one of their past eight matches, the omens do not look good for a side who only came up from Ligue 2 last season.

Like Montpellier, goals have been a problem for Troyes and they have scored just 31 in their 36 games. They have however conceded 55, winning just nine of their games in the process. Mali striker Adama Niane has stood out thanks to his eight goals but that looks like not being nearly enough to get his team away from the danger zone and safe.

Sadly for Troyes, although the head-to-head record between the two clubs is close, we see Montpellier winning this one and we advise backing the home side on the Full Time Result market.

For our correct score prediction meanwhile, we think the game will finish 1-0 the hosts.
