Newport County vs Cheltenham Predictions
- After reaching the play-off final last season, Newport County were hoping to piece together another promotion push this season but things haven’t quite gone to plan, with the side stationed in 13th place.
- Without a win in 9 league matches, the hosts come into Wednesday’s game desperate for a result.
- Meanwhile, Cheltenham are enjoying a stronger campaign, currently 8th and 1 point outside the play-offs.
- Nonetheless, the visitors aren’t in great form themselves, winning just 1 of their last 9 league games; drawing 6 times in the process.
Newport itching for improvement
After an impressive campaign last term that unfortunately ended in play-off final heartbreak, hosts Newport County were hoping to be a part of the promotion picture in League Two once again this time around. Nonetheless, the side have struggled to hit the same heights and come into Wednesday’s game in 13th place, 9 points short of the top 7.
Without a win in 9 league matches, Newport are heavily struggling and are under big pressure. The fact that the hosts have also lost 6 of said fixtures is an even bigger concern and if things don’t pick up swiftly, it’ll be action at the bottom end of the table they’ll be dragged into rather than at the top.
Cheltenham looking for return to winning ways
Meanwhile, after an average season last term which ended with a mid table finish, not a huge amount was expected of Cheltenham this term. Nonetheless, the visitors have thus far performed reasonably well and head into the New Year just 1 point and 1 place outside of the play-offs.
Cheltenham would be inside the top 7 but for their recent downturn in form and that’s something they’ll be hoping to address in this trip to Wales. Indeed, the side have now failed to win any of their last 4 league games and whilst they’ve at least taken a point from 3 of said outings, it’s wins that they desperately need to stay in the promotion hunt.
A close game is expected
Ultimately, we’re expecting this to be a competitive game and separating the two appears a tough task. Newport have been struggling in recent months but Rodney Parade is typically a tough venue to visit and with the visitors in the midst of a blip, the hosts should certainly be able to give them a run for their money; despite the 8 point gap between the two in the standings.
All things considered, backing a draw looks by far the best way to play as far as the betting is concerned in this one and is something we’re more than happy to do. Newport’s last two home games have ended 1-1 and with 3 of Cheltenham’s last 4 outings having ended the same way, it’s a scoreline that looks very likely to appear once again on Wednesday.
