Tip Reasoning

  • In 22 home league fixtures, Northampton have suffered just five defeats
  • Exeter have won just three of their last 12 games against teams in the top 10
  • Northampton are unbeaten in four outings

Can the Cobblers seal promotion?

A win for Northampton will be enough to earn promotion back to League Two at the first attempt if Port Vale lose on Monday night, and recent form suggests they have a good chance of beating a strong Exeter side.

The Cobblers have won three in a row, albeit against lowly trio Leyton Orient, Harrogate and Oldham, but they have excelled at home this season, picking up 43 points thanks to 13 victories and four draws.

Jon Brady’s side have lost only two of their last 11 at Sixfields, where they have conceded just 14 goals (the best defensive record in the division), with Tranmere, Salford and Newport among those to leave empty handed.

Will Exeter slip up again?

A late 2-1 win over Barrow on Tuesday night means Exeter are now level with Forest Green in first place and they have sealed promotion to League One for the first time in a decade.

Matt Taylor’s side have been in excellent form of late, winning eight of their last ten, but they have invariably slipped up away, losing 2-0 at Tranmere and drawing 0-0 with Port Vale.

Indeed, the Grecians have struggled a touch against sides in the top 10, picking up just three victories in their last 12 attempts, with further defeats coming at Sutton and Mansfield.

I think Northampton could win this game, so that is my initial selection, with 2-1 to the hosts my correct score prediction.
