A win a must for Paraguay

Two sides who are currently outside of the top five will clash on Thursday night as Paraguay play host to Chile.

It’s not been a good time for the hosts lately as they have won just once in their last eight matches in all competitions and were dealt an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Bolivia in the final game of the previous international break. Their chance at qualification is looking ominous, but if they can put a couple of wins together in their upcoming games and results go their way, they could climb as high as third. First up, they have to beat Chile, whom they lost to just under a month ago.

Cagey game in Chile

Chile’s man of the moment, Ben Brereton Diaz, found the breakthrough on that occasion as he opened the scoring before Mauricio Isla doubled it. They worked hard defensively and claimed the three points. For a side who are usually ranked within the top 20 in the world, Chile’s qualifying campaign has been rather poor, they’ve qualified for the world cup just three times in the last 35 years and they run the risk of missing out here, as they sit in the sixth spot in a tight group.

A loss would be somewhat disastrous for both teams and a draw wouldn’t be the end of the world for the visitors. Chile are synonymous with under 2.5 goals but there is better value in both teams not to score. Neither side will want to lose and so a cagey game is expected. Chile can nick a victory by the single goal here.
