Tip Reasoning

  • These two sides have conceded the joint-most goals in the league – 120 combined.
  • Peterborough United are conceding an average of 2.1 goals per game this season.
  • The hosts have seen over 2.5 goals in their last ten matches against Reading in all competitions.

Two of the leading candidates for the drop go head-to-head at the Weston Homes Stadium on Wednesday night as Peterborough United play host to Reading.

Now or never for both sides

Hosts Peterborough United have had a torrid time this season and have not tasted victory in the league since early December when they secured a home victory against Millwall. However, they’re currently on a run of three straight home losses and you have to feel that they need to start putting results together immediately if they’re to avoid the drop – particularly given following this match, they travel away to take on 23rd-placed Derby County at the weekend.

Just like the hosts, Reading have conceded a monstrous 60 goals this season and it’s that dodgy defence that has been the catalyst for their poor league position. They’ve not been too bad in an attacking sense, scoring an average of just over a goal per game, but their inability to keep clean sheets has meant that relegation is a real possibility. The Royals have a pretty torrid record away to Peterborough in recent years, losing 12 of their last 17 league visits, and so avoiding a ninth straight defeat could be easier said than done.

Goals are likely

Despite how poor the visitors have been, they’ve at least managed to get on the scoresheet more often than not. The hosts are scoring an average of less than a goal per game overall this season, but both defences are horrendous. It’s now or never for these two and with both outfits looking at this fixture as a key match to gain three points, we could be in for an entertaining match with goals in abundance. If forced to pick, we’d want to side with Reading, given they seem to have more luck in an attacking sense.
