Atletico Mineiro had a pretty successful season last term, winning the Campeonato Mineiro first and then coming 2^nd in the Brazilian Serie A, although they did end up 12 points adrift of champions Corinthians. They have started this season in good shape too, winning three and drawing one of their four opening Campeonato Mineiro matches to put them at the top of the table. They managed to get a win over Melgar in their opening group match as well, and a win on Wednesday would drastically increase their chances of topping the group.

Independiente didn’t have such a successful campaign though. They finished 3^rd in the first stage of the Ecuadorian Primera A and 4^th in the second stage, and they only managed to qualify for the group stages thanks to an away goals win over Guarani. They did win their opening Primera A match and got a point against Colo Colo in the first group match though.
