Rosenborg vs RB Leipzig Predictions

Rosenborg welcome RB Leipzig to the Lerkendal Stadion on Thursday in a fascinating looking Europa League Group B contest in Trondheim. Both teams will be keen to get their first positive result in the Group having lost their respective opening fixtures last month.

Norwegian side Rosenborg take a twelve-match unbeaten home record into this week’s game. The Troillongan have won six on the spin in front of their own supporters in all competitions, a run that includes Europa League qualification wins over Cork City and Shkendija.

Rosenborg have lost just once in eighteen at home in all competitions in total and while any team who display such consistency at home shouldn’t be underestimated, the Norwegians have generally had trouble transferring their terrific domestic home form to the continental stage.

The Troillongan have won just six of their last sixteen Europa League matches at the  Lerkendal Stadion in a sequence stretching all the way back to 2016. They have however, won four of their last six, though three of the teams they beat were of questionable quality (Cork City, Shkendija and Vardar).

On a positive note, Rosenborg have shown incredible consistency in the goal scoring stakes during the same period. They only failed to find the net once in their last eight Europa League matches at home, despite winning only 50% of those contests.

On Thursday, they take on an RB Leipzig side who have shown a propensity for conceding goals this season. The Germans have kept just three clean sheets in fourteen competitive fixtures so far in 2018/19, though their explosive attacking play has helped to mask their defensive deficiencies. Red Bull only failed to score in one of those same fourteen outings, a goal-getting record we expect to be enhanced further this week.

RB Leipzig have only lost one of their last seven matches in total, though that solitary defeat did come in the Europa League against their sister club from Austria, RB Salzburg. That result aside, it’s been an impressing month for RB Leipzig and we’re tipping them to maintain their momentum on Thursday.

Rosenborg will be keen to claw their way back into Group B contention after slipping to a 1-0 defeat to Celtic on Match Day 1, though they are likely to find life tough against what’s arguably the Group’s strongest team RB Leipzig.

We’re tipping the Germans to win, though we recommend you combine the outright result with a both teams to score selection. With just three clean sheets in their last fourteen fixtures, Leipzig have shown little sign of plugging their leaks at the back, and seem content with trying to out-score teams most weeks.

That approach generally leads to high scoring matches and five of RB Leipzig’s last eight matches have finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Similarly, four of Rosenborg’s last six home matches saw over 2.5 goals registered and we’re forecasting that goal total to be reached again on Thursday.
