Southampton vs West Brom Predictions
Southampton’s midweek clash with Tottenham didn’t go entirely to plan at St. Mary’s. They went into half time with a respectable 1-1 scoreline after Virgil Van Dijk’s early opener was cancelled out by Dele Alli, but an early goal for Spurs in the second half was followed by two late goals from the visitors to finish the game 4-1.
This ended Southampton’s four match unbeaten streak in all competitions and resigned them to just their second home defeat of the season. However, they will feel they have the edge over West Brom coming into this game.
West Brom are looking like a vastly improved side compared to last season, but their festive period of fixtures hasn’t been entirely kind to them. They have played Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal in December, with only a 3-1 win against Swansea breaking up that horrendous run of fixtures. They have understandably lost against these three big teams, but they have by no means humiliated themselves and have only conceded four goals in the process.
The Baggies earlier good form means they are in a rather promising spot in the Premier League, sitting 9th in the table with 23 points from their first 18 games. Southampton lie just above them with one more point to their name, although there is a gap opening up between the top six and the rest of the table.
Away from home West Brom have found it very difficult to find three points though. They have only managed to beat Leicester and Crystal Palace on the road this season, drawing three and losing the remaining four.
They have been fairly solid at the back away from home though, and as a result only two of their nine away days have seen three or more goals scored. This should play into their hands at Southampton as well, as the hosts are without star striker Charlie Austin.
West Brom will feel they have a real chance here. Three of their four defeats away from home this season have come against top four sides, whilst Southampton have only won four of their nine home games in the Premier League.
This makes odds of 11/10 for a West Brom Win or Draw Double Chance look very good value for money, so I’m backing that along with a 1-1 correct score predictions at 13/2.
