Sporting Gijon vs Reus Deportiu Predictions

This Saturday’s match sees one of the biggest clubs in the Spanish Segunda Division play host to one of the smallest. Reus have done well to reach this level and survival will again be their principal objective this term. Sporting though are desperate for a return to the top flight, having dropped out of La Liga in 2017.

They made the play-offs on their first season back at this level and only finished 5 points below Rayo Vallecano who went up as champions. They don’t have talented winger Rubén García this term though with the 25 year old moving to Osasuna, while last season’s top scorer Michael Santos has also moved on, leaving Rubén Baraja with a bit of a rebuilding job on his hands. A return of 11 points from 8 games suggests they aren’t quite hitting the heights of last term yet but they are still very much within touching distance of the top six.

As for Reus, they’re in the bottom half again, which is no great surprise but they are again finding a way to hover above the drop-zone. The Catalan club do come into this one on the back of successive defeats though, providing Xavi Bartolo with a bit of a challenge in terms of picking his troops up for this tough trip to Asturias.

Sporting have been very strong at home so far with an average of 2.5 points per game in front of their own fans. They aren’t in great form overall though with just 1 win in their last 5 matches and given Reus have actually won 2 of their last 3 away, the Full-Time result market may be one to avoid here.

It does look certain to be a low-scoring game though. All of Sporting Gijon home games and all of Reus away games so far this season in the league have produced under 2.5 goals in total. Sporting have been very tough to break down at home, conceding just once in their four league outings at El Molinon to date. However, with just 3 goals in their last 5 league outings, they are struggling to create much and those two summer departures are starting to look very significant.

Reus generally set their stall out to defend deep and they have a respectable average of just 1 goal per game conceded away. They will certainly be pretty cautious again here and overall backing Under 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score – No could be the way to go.
