Spurs in crisis mode ahead of key Rennes clash

Tottenham probably need to beat Rennes in the Europa Conference League on Thursday to reach the next round but this could be a big ask for Spurs.

Rennes have already qualified as group winners, but Spurs need to match Vitesse’s result against Mura to join them in the next round.

In normal circumstances, I would expect Spurs to beat a Rennes side with nothing to play for but the North Londoners are in the midst of a crisis.

Their preparations for the hectic festive period have been hit by a coronavirus outbreak and eight players and five members of staff have returned positive Covid-19 tests.

Unfortunately we don’t know which members of their squad will be missing on Thursday and that makes predicting a result here incredibly tough to call.

As such I can only offer a one star prediction for this match, and both teams to score may be the way to go here. Rennes have scored in each of their last 15 games across all competitions and both teams to score has landed in four of their last seven away games.

Tottenham have only failed to score in two of their 11 home games and as Rennes have nothing to play for they should be able to find a way through even if they are unable to field a strong side. I wouldn’t recommend backing a correct score until the lineups have been confirmed or we at least have a clearer idea of which players are missing, but on the basis Spurs may be without a number of regulars I’m going for a 2-1 win for the visitors at this stage.
