Edinson Cavani stands out from a star-studded Uruguay attack. The 35-year-old has scored four goals in his last two starts for Uruguay and has hit the net four times in seven appearances for Valencia this season.

Uruguay vs South Korea Predictions

  • Uruguay have won seven of their nine games under Diego Alonso.
  • Uruguay have won six of their last eight World Cup ties.
  • South Korea have lost six of their last nine World Cup games.

Dark horses Uruguay fly under the radar

Uruguay head to the World Cup as one of our dark horses for the competition and they can get their campaign off to a flyer against a South Korea side that have won just one of their last nine fixtures in this competition.

The two-time World Cup champions possess an underrated squad full of stars and have excelled under Diego Alonso, who took charge a year ago and has overseen seven wins from nine games.

Jose Gimenez is the star of a solid-looking back line, while their midfield includes Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Torreira and the in-form Federico Valverde. Up front is where they really shine, though, with veteran stars Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani being joined by more raw talents such as Darwin Nunez and Facundo Pellistri.

Son set to play through injury

South Korea have their own attacking star and Son Heung-min is set to start despite having to wear a mask after a recent facial injury cast doubt over his ability to play in this World Cup.

Aside from Son, there is a gulf in quality between South Korea and Uruguay and their World Cup history paints a bleak picture ahead of Thursday’s game.

Their last World Cup game was a shock win over Germany as they took advantage of the reigning champions’ desperation with two late counter-attacks but prior to that South Korea were winless in eight games in this competition, losing six of them.

Cavani to fire Uruguay to victory

Given Uruguay’s form and the fact they have won six of their last eight World Cup ties, they look a fantastic price to get the three points on Thursday.

They have scored at least two goals in five of their last eight games but, with South Korea scoring in nine of their last ten outings, a 2-1 correct score prediction is my choice.

As far as goalscorers go, Edinson Cavani stands out from a star-studded Uruguay attack. The 35-year-old has scored four goals in his last two starts for Uruguay and has hit the net four times in seven appearances for Valencia this season.
