Valencia vs Sevilla Predictions

Sevilla have had a peculiar week. They failed to win at home for the first time in 5 months last weekend when they went down to a 2-1 defeat against Real Sociedad to end their 17 match winning streak on home soil. Then on Thursday something even stranger happened as they won 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League. It was the first time all season they have won on the road in either Europe or La Liga and puts them in pole position to reach the last 4 again of a competition they love. The cups may now become their priority with European football next term all but guaranteed in the league but they are too far off Villarreal to really stand much chance of a top four finish.

That could mean they will rotate their team a little here which is some positive news for a Valencia side that has seen their season go from bad to worse. Their first match following the ill-fated reign of Gary Neville ended in a 2-1 defeat at Las Palmas last weekend with all 3 goals coming in comical fashion. They are 6 points above the relegation zone but have a really tough run-in with matches still to come against 3 of the top 4 including both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Therefore Valencia could really use 3 points here but you can’t feel confident about backing them given they have lost 5 of their last 6 matches in all competitions and have only won 1 of their last 10 league games at the Mestalla. By the same token you wouldn’t be too confident punting on Sevilla given they have failed to win away all season in La Liga and may have some tired legs after a high-tempo Europa League game on Thursday. Therefore almost by a process of elimination you are inclined to back the draw here and there are likely to be a few goals. 5 of Valencia’s last 6 home games have had over 2.5 goals as have all of Sevilla’s last 5 matches so consider backing this to finish in a 2-2 draw at 10/1.
