Then on Thursday something even stranger happened as they won 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League. It was the first time all season they have won on the road in either Europe or La Liga and puts them in pole position to reach the last 4 again of a competition they love. The cups may now become their priority with European football next term all but guaranteed in the league but they are too far off Villarreal to really stand much chance of a top four finish.

That could mean they will rotate their team a little here which is some positive news for a Valencia side that has seen their season go from bad to worse.
