West Bromwich Albion to Win

Reason for tip

West Brom have the bigger squad and Steve Bruce may need an extended cup run to keep some of his fringe players happy. The Carabao Cup is way down the priority list for Sheffield United, who are being stretched thin by injuries at the moment.

West Bromwich Albion 1-0

Reason for tip

The Blades have failed to score on their last two visits to the Hawthorns and were beaten 4-0 there a year ago. West Brom have been topping the attacking stats in the Championship so far this year and have only failed to score twice in their last 13 at home.

West Bromwich Albion vs Sheffield United Predictions

Baggies’ deeper squad should see them through

West Brom would appear to have more riding on a cup run than Sheffield United right now and ought to progress without Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie going to extra time. The Baggies are unbeaten so far this season and were unlucky not to win against Watford on Monday.

Steve Bruce has switched the system from a three at the back to a 4-2-3-1 formation with Karlan Grant his chosen spearhead. Albion have had the most shots in the division so far this term and, with Jed Wallace and Jon Swift pulling the strings, have also produced the most key passes of any Championship club.

But Bruce did deliver some bad news on Monday as he revealed big-money striker signing Daryl Dike had picked up an injury in training, so he’s out for some time. That could lead to a fresh chance for Calum Robinson, who may lead the line against his former club in a much-changed WBA side on Thursday.

Carabao Cup is low on Blades’ priority list

The Blades haven’t quite got the luxury of bringing in an experienced international for this game and they are likely to make a host of alterations for a competition down the priority list for them too. Oli McBurnie isn’t ready to make his comeback just yet so the strikeforce will probably feature Billy Sharp and Reda Khadra.

With so many changes expected, it’s hard to get an accurate handle on how this game might go, but it’s easy to see which club had the better bench options last time out so the Baggies are worthy favourites for us here. In the likelihood that all the players that have been creating chances for Albion this term will be rested by Bruce, the recommended correct score play is for a 1-0 home success.
