West Ham vs Southampton Predictions
West Ham just seem unable to pick up a win at the moment. The loss of key attacking units such as Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet to injury has hit them harder than they would ever have imagined and they find themselves in a bit of bother now.
Their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Boxing Day made it eight games without a win for West Ham, but to be fair to them they have only been defeated twice during that time.
The Hammers have drawn eight of their 18 Premier League matches so far this season, a tally that gives them the joint highest draw record.
Their last five games have all ended as draws, with just two goals scored and two conceded as they struggle for creativity up front.
They will have been looking forward to this game though. Southampton were disastrously out of form and had lost five of their last six games and won none. Until Saturday, when they emphatically ended their poor run of form with a 4-0 thrashing of Premier League title favourites Arsenal.
The party started when Cuco Martina scored a stunner of a goal partway through the first half, and then Shane Long scored either side of a Jose Fonte goal in the second half to wrap up a very impressive result.
This leaves Southampton in 12th position with 24 points and West Ham in 10th with 26, so a win for the visitors on Monday would see them leapfrog the struggling Hammers.
But I think it will be difficult for Southampton to get a win on Monday. West Ham’s defence has been unshakeable recently, and despite all their attacking problems they have only lost twice in their last 12 outings in all competitions.
Both of these defeats came away from home, and at home they haven’t lost since the end of August. This makes odds of 7/10 for a West Ham Win or Draw Double Chance look really good value for money. I’m also going to back a goalless draw at 15/2 as well.
