This game is unlikely to be one of the more watchable games this weekend in the Championship but it is a big game for both clubs who look for some much needed cheer to head into the festive period. Overall though it looks a game where defence could come out on top, with Wigan and Ipswich the teams with the worst two goal scoring records in the division.

Wigan are really struggling badly for goals. They’ve netted just 0.76 goals per game in the Championship and a miserable 0.60 at home. They come into this game having failed to score in narrow defeats in all of their last 3 games. However, they will at least take heart from defending quite well in those matches, all of which were against teams with genuine promotion hopes. At the other end their threat is very limited though and even when he plays, top scorer Will Grigg is not getting the service needed to score goals on a regular basis. They’ve failed to score in 70% of their home games this term and against a solid Ipswich defence you wouldn’t bet against that happening again here.

The Tractor Boys have been involved in a few more entertaining games of late after a really drab opening couple of months, however, it’s hard to see that trend continuing here. They’ve netted just 0.50 goals per game on their travels this season, failing to score in 60% of their away matches. The return of one or two of their more attack-minded players perhaps makes them the more likely side to break the deadlock here but overall it’s very hard to see where the goals are going to come from.

Both teams have scored in only 20% of Wigan home games and 30% of Ipswich away games this season. There have been under 2.5 goals in 67% of Ipswich matches and 62% of Wigan games this term.
