Wolverhampton vs Gillingham Predictions

Julen Lopetegui’s Wolves make their return to competitive action with a round of 16 EFL Cup clash against League Two opponents, Gillingham. Given the gulf in class between the sides, there is simply no value in backing the Premier League hosts at as short as 1/10.

Luckily for us, there is something of a case to be made for a potential upset here. Firstly, Wolves have never progressed beyond the round of 16 since 1995/96 when losing in the quarter finals against Aston Villa, while they also enter this encounter on the back of some suspect form across all competitions (W1, D1, L4).

On the other hand, Gillingham have already made club history with this being their furthest League Cup progression, and they’ve already beaten Premier League opponents, Brentford, on penalties in the last round. In fact, seven of Gillingham’s last ten League Cup games were settled on penalties, so we’re going for a small stake main selection on another draw in this encounter, a result which is arguably the minnows’ only route to success.
