Barcelona’s thrilling 4-3 victory at home to Real Madrid on Sunday moved them on the brink of securing the La Liga title and a win over city rivals Espanyol would guarantee them that silverware.

Seven points clear with only three games to go, it looks a formality for Barca and how they’d love to be crowned champions at the home of their bitter neighbours.

Real Madrid’s result at home to Mallorca on Wednesday does play a factor, but the Catalan Giants will still be focused on recording success and their come-from-behind win over Los Blancos four days ago was their 14th win in their last 15 league games.

Points are also of importance to Espanyol, who have suffered three straight defeats to leave themselves five points clear of relegation danger.

It is likely that they have already done enough to survive but it is of no guarantee with nine points still up for grabs and they have failed to win any of their last 12 battles with Barca.

But, for all their attacking talent, Barcelona have kept only one clean sheet in their last eight games and it is an obvious flaw that Espanyol may be able to expose.

Espanyol have scored in nine straight home games, a run which features a victory over Real Madrid and a score draw with Atletico, so they can be confident of getting on the scoresheet.

Both teams have also scored in the last four La Liga meetings between the sides, so correct-score punters may want to plunge for a 3-1 away win. That was the scoreline when Hansi Flick’s side won the home fixture in November.
