Rennes vs Marseille Predictions

- Both teams have scored in Marseille’s last three pre-season matches
- Both teams have scored in three of the last four head-to-head matches
Both teams likely to be on the mark at Roazhon Park
All eyes will be on Marseille when Roberto De Zerbi’s side kick off their Ligue 1 campaign with a tough away trip to Rennes on Friday night. Les Phoceens were the closest challengers to Paris Saint-Germain last season, albeit they finished 19 points behind the treble winners.
Their squad has been strengthened by the summer arrivals of Angel Gomes, Igor Paixao and C.J. Egan-Riley plus the return of some familiar faces on permanent deals. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Jonathan Rowe and Neal Maupay enjoyed enough success on loan last season to prolong their time in the French city while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is back after a one-season stint in the Saudi Pro League.
Aubameyang has looked sharp in pre-season and his goalscoring record suggests he will start in place of last season’s first-choice striker Amine Gouiri. The Gabonese goal-getter struck 30 goals in 51 appearances for Marseille in 2023-24 and added 21 in 36 for Al-Qadsiah last term.
Kalimuendo and Aubameyang in good form
Rennes have fought hard to hold on to their best players while adding some experienced Ligue 1 faces along the way, including ex-Marseille duo Valentin Rongier and Quentin Merlin. But Adrien Truffert, Ligue 1’s best left-back, went to Bournemouth and right-back Lorenz Assignon joined Stuttgart.
The rumours around striker Arnaud Kalimuendo’s departure continue but, as things stand, last season’s 17-goal top scorer is likely to be in the squad for Friday’s game. Rennes still have the goal power to beat most teams at home, but Marseille’s overall strength may be good enough to get them a draw or better.
Backing both teams to score looks the best way in with each team recording multiple BTTS matches in pre-season, added to the fact that last season’s clashes finished 4-2 and 2-1 to Marseille.
