Wigan vs Brighton Predictions

Brighton are once again having a very good season without really getting the credit they deserve. The Seagulls average 1.92 points per game so far this term, which is almost identical to their ratio last season when they only missed out on automatic promotion on goal difference. Defensively they’ve been very solid, conceding just 0.69 goals per game on average in the Championship with clean sheets in 62% of their games. They haven’t been as clinical as some of the other promotion candidates though, having scored 10 goals fewer than Newcastle and 9 less than Norwich.

On the road, Brighton have only won 2 of their last 8 in the Championship with under 2.5 goals in 6 of those games, so they can be frustrated by teams, and Wigan aren’t likely to be too adventurous here even though they are playing at home. The Latics made a poor start to the season but Gary Caldwell has tweaked a few things and made them tougher to beat of late. Much like Bristol City and MK Dons last season, they came up from League One as a side with an attacking reputation but one that was quickly found out at this level.

Therefore, Caldwell was perhaps wise to act early on and they come into this match unbeaten in 4, following a late Shaun MacDonald strike which won them a point from a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Tuesday. Their last 6 matches have produced just 6 goals with 3 at each end, so their 5 man midfield has really done a good job at negating the threat of opposing teams.

There’s no reason why Wigan will alter their approach here so this looks likely to be another tight game with few goals. Brighton are certainly one of the strongest teams in the league but they rarely win convincingly on the road and average just 0.83 goals per away game so far this term.

Therefore backing Under 2.5 Goals at 7/10 looks a solid punt here.
