The European Tour heads to Spain for the Spanish Open with Jon Rahm a huge favourite, while the PGA Tour looks more open at the Shriners Children’s Open.
781/1 double for the Spanish Open and Shriners Children’s Open
Sam Burns did his bit for our 2,393/1 double last week, winning the Sanderson Farms Championship, but Grant Forrest could manage only 27th place in the Dunhill Links.
This week, it is time to set eyes on a 781/1 double, with two of the best young sluggers in the world capable of winning the two main tournaments on planet golf.
On the European Tour, Jon Rahm has been chalked up as such an emphatic favourite for the Spanish Open that it appears the rest of the field need not bother to turn up. Golf does not work like that, though, and nobody is certain to triumph over 72 holes, especially on a course as easy as Club de Campo, where everyone in the line-up will be expecting to make plenty of birdies.
Guido Migliozzi, a 33/1 chance, can throw down the gauntlet to 9/4 Rahm and go close to upsetting the local hero.
Migliozzi is a two-time European Tour champion who has shown plenty of courage since joining the circuit in 2019. He finished fourth on his Major debut in June – in the US Open at Torrey Pines – and has been a runner-up on the European Tour three times this year. Last week, the Italian stallion tied for 17th place in the Dunhill in breezy Scotland, and he has moved to a more suitable track in Madrid with high hopes of success.
This week’s PGA Tour event – the Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas – could go the way of 22/1 chance Scottie Scheffler.
The Texas-based powerhouse performed superbly on his Ryder Cup debut last time out, going unbeaten and thrashing Rahm in the Sunday singles, and the confidence gained from becoming an American hero may provide the catalyst for a Tour breakthrough this week.
