There are two high-profile tournaments for golf punters to tackle this week as the DP World Tour stays in the Middle East for the Dubai Desert Classic and the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing continues with the Farmers Insurance Open.

Rory McIlroy leads the market in Dubai while Jon Rahm tops the betting for the Farmers, which starts on Wednesday to avoid a clash with the NFL’s championship games.

That top-class duo will get plenty of attention from punters but Racing Post golf tipster Joe Champion has looked elsewhere for an each-way double which pays out at 727-1.

727/1 Dubai Desert Classic & Farmers Insurance Open eachway double

Two-time Desert Classic winner McIlroy is unquestionably the man to beat but the popular Northern Irishman is making his first start of 2023 and if he’s at all vulnerable, Danish dude Nicolai Hojgaard looks among the likely candidates to cash in at a big price.

Hojgaard missed the cut on debut at Emirates Golf Club last season but he’s proven in the desert, recording a top-five finish at the DP World Tour Championship in 2021 and winning the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in 2022.

He drove the ball superbly on the way to a tenth-placed finish in Abu Dhabi last weekend and any improvement with the putter should see him trouble the leaderboard.

Double up Hojgaard with Tony Finau, who can upstage Rahm by winning the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, California.

Finau failed to make the weekend at the 2022 Farmers but his tournament form prior to that disappointment was an impressive 1-29-5-2-7-3 and the South Course, where three of the four rounds of the event are staged, is a match made in heaven for the long-driving Utah man.

The 33-year-old has won three PGA Tour titles since July, so he should be brimming with confidence as he returns to one of his favourite tracks.
