FST’s Fantasy Football tips for GW14: will Big Sam stop Villa's stars?

Before becoming a Sports Journalist for Free Super Tips, Aaron spent three years studying Sports Journalism at the University of Sunderland while taking in the Black Cats' 'glory years' under Martin O'Neill. Now back in Northern Ireland he turns niche stats into predictions for FST, while he's one of the few people on this island who is equally comfortable at Windsor Park and the Aviva.

The midweek round of top-flight action was a tough one, with Man City falling short, Bruno Fernandes blanking and Chelsea falling apart at Wolves.

There’s little time to reflect on the previous round, with the deadline for gameweek 14 coming just 37 hours after the last gameweek ended. That’s not much time to sort out any issues you have, but we have you covered if you’re struggling to make big decisions.

This week has seen us lose patience with the Man City attack and return to old favourites Burnley. The Clarets have been the to-go option for bargain defensive assets in recent seasons and that could be the case again.

Don’t forget that you can get a more in-depth look at each match this weekend in our Premier League predictions.

Fantasy Football Transfer Tips this Week

Burnley on the up

Having made an awful start, many FPL manager abandoned the budget Burnley options. However, the Clarets are building themselves back up again and look like a good option in defence. They’ve kept back-to-back clean sheets and Sean Dyche’s men are usually reliable for defensive returns.

Given that, we see value in picking Charlie Taylor (4.4m) to fill out the defence. The Clarets have some decent games over the Christmas period so Taylor should bring in some decent returns.

Fernandes still United’s main man

Bruno Fernandes (11m) blanked in his first away game of the season this week. While that was a disappointing turn for those who captained him, he is going to have occasional off-nights.

A quick glance over the United side shows that Fernandes remains their top FPL asset. Given that United host a Leeds side who look very shaky at the back, we wouldn’t be surprised if many ignore his midweek struggles and hand the Portuguese the armband again.

Back Villa over Big Sam

West Brom may have frustrated FPL bosses with a draw at City, but their debut under Sam Allardyce will be tricky. Aston Villa have won to nil in five of their first six away games and they should cause problems for the Baggies.

Given Villa’s great defensive record, we’re doubling up on them at the back. Emi Martinez (4.8m) and Matt Targett (4.6m) are great value options given their points returns so far. We expect them to continue that form against a poor West Brom side.

Who to Captain in GW14

Kane Spurs Europa League

Harry Kane

Harry Kane (10.9m) may not have banked many points at Liverpool, but he is capable of tearing apart sides on his day. Unfortunately for Leicester, he’s enjoyed plenty of good days against them.

Kane has hit 16 goals in 10 clashes with the Foxes, no side has conceded more against the England hitman. Having scored home and away against Leicester last season, we think Kane is the best option for captaincy this week.
