Rennes will test the Rossoneri rearguard

AC Milan’s defence will be tested by an exciting Rennes team that will not lack confidence heading to the San Siro for Thursday’s Europa League play-off round first leg.

The Rossoneri rearguard has shipped nine goals in their last 10 matches in all competitions with four of those coming by way of penalties.

Stefano Pioli’s side are scoring enough goals to paper over the defensive cracks at the moment, but backing the hosts at heavy odds on prices for this first leg is only for the very brave. Milan have won two of their last four home games with Sunday’s win and performance against Napoli offering some encouragement that they might be on the right track again.

They do not lack potential goalscorers either with Arnaud Kalimuendo, Benjamin Bourigeard, Amine Gouiri and Ludovic Blas all having contributed six or more strikes each this season. Kalimuendo, who has scored seven goals in his last seven appearances for Rennes, looks a good shout to get ont he scoresheet. He is on Rennes’ penalty rota, which could be significant given the number of spot-kicks Milan have been conceding of late.

Both teams to score looks a safer option than backing Milan here at short odds with each of the two teams recently having shown a tendency to trade goals.
