Tip Reasoning

  • Leeds have lost five of seven games away to sides above them in the table
  • Villa have won four of five clashes at home sides outside the top eight (D1)
  • The hosts have seen BTTS land in 70% of their games at Villa Park this term
  • Only one of Villa’s home wins this term have come by a single goal

Both sides fresh from a break

After their FA Cup Third Round exits, these two sides have been given a decent break ahead of this Premier League clash on Wednesday. The pair last played on the 22nd January, with Leeds losing to Newcastle and Villa claiming a win at Everton.

Those contrasting results could point to an obvious winner at Villa Park this week, especially given how poor Leeds have been on the road this term. Steven Gerrard’s reign has seen Villa deliver against all but the best in the division, so back them to take the points in this one.

Away woes for Leeds

While Leeds were able to produce a 3-2 win at West Ham in their last trip, that’s a result which has lost shine as the weeks have went on. The Hammers are struggling right now, while it is a rare bit of joy in a tough season on the road for Marcelo Bielsa and co.

Leeds have been beaten in five of their 10 away games this season, claiming five of their nine away points against the bottom four. Away to sides above them they’ve been beaten in five of seven trips, while this week they take on an improved Villa side.

All going to plan for Villains

Gerrard’s arrival has moved the needle for Villa in the transfer market, with the arrivals of Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho evidence of the new bosses’ pull. Claiming 16 points across their 10 games under the former Rangers manager is also very encouraging, having taken 10 points from 11 under Dean Smith.

Since Gerrard’s arrival at Villa Park, his side have beaten Brighton and Leicester. Their last outing here saw them fight back to draw 2-2 with Man United, with their defeats coming to two of the top three. Overall this term, Villa are unbeaten against sides outside the top eight, winning four of five games.

Villa’s draw with United and win at Everton is an impressive pair of results to take into this clash, so I’m siding with them for a victory here. However, Villa continue to ship goals at home with 70% of their matches seeing both teams score. With the same number of Leeds’ trips seeing BTTS land, I’m going with Villa to win and Leeds to score.

A 3-1 home victory my correct score prediction, with Villa winning by a single goal only once at home this term.

Aston Villa predicted lineup: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne; McGinn, Luiz, Ramsey; Buendia, Watkins, Coutinho

Leeds predicted lineup: Meslier; Ayling, Llorente, Struijk, Dallas; Forshaw, Koch; Raphinha, Rodrigo, Harrison; Roberts
