Austria vs France Predictions

  • Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals landed in five out of seven of France’s games at the last World Cup
  • It is 17 games since Austria failed to score
  • France have scored at least twice in six of their last eight outings

Fancied France start campaign

France have reached the final in three of the last four major tournaments they have competed in and are a warm order to add to their trophy collection by winning Euro 2024.

They face a tough opening game on Monday however, against an Austria side that have come on leaps and bounds under Ralf Rangnick’s tutelage.

Das Team finished just a point behind a dominant Belgium side in qualifying and have only lost one of their last 16 games, a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Belgians.

In that run Rangnick’s side have beaten Germany, Italy and secured home and away wins over Sweden in qualifiers.

Austria not to be underestimated

Austria recently recorded a 6-1 win over Turkey and look set to cause issues for any team they face at the tournament.

They have been dealt a pair of injury blows with captain David Alaba failing to recover from a knee injury and keeper Alexander Schlager also missing out.

Nevertheless there are plenty of quality operators in this Austrian team, most notably in midfield where an all-Bundesliga quintet of Konrad Laimer, Nicolas Seiwald, Florian Grillitsch, Christoph Baumgartner and Marcel Sabitzer are likely to line up.

It is yet to be seen if Marko Arnautovic or Michael Gregoritsch will get the nod up front but this is a solid outfit that should not be underestimated.

France finished their warm up for the tournament with a low-key 0-0 draw against Canada but they had few issues in qualifying, winning all but one game and finishing four points clear of the Netherlands in second place.

Les Bleus broke a qualifying record with a 14-0 win over Gibraltar and while this is unlikely to be as high-scoring, it should still be an entertaining opening affair.

High-scoring affair fancied

Austria’s last three games have seen both teams find the net and it is 17 games since Das Team failed to score.

Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score has landed in five of France’s last nine outings and a repeat of that is fancied in this group game.

France have some of the best attacking talents in the world and have netted at least twice in six of their last eight games.

Les Bleus may just edge this one so take a 2-1 win for Didier Deschamps’ men.

Marcus Thuram had a solid campaign for Inter and looks likely to have played himself into a starting position for France.

The 26-year-old netted twice in 164 minutes in qualifying and could get on the scoresheet here.
